Why Blackie Spit Is One of My Favourite Engagement Session Locations in the Fraser Valley

If you’ve been looking for an engagement session location that gives you a little bit of everything, let me introduce you to one of my favourites: Blackie Spit in Crescent Beach.

And when I say a little bit of everything, I mean it.

You’ve got the beach.
You’ve got open fields.
You’ve got tall grasses.
You’ve got a hill.
You’ve got gorgeous little wildflowers.
And then, just when you think you’ve taken enough photos… the sun starts setting and decides to show off.

Honestly, Blackie Spit understood the assignment.

Why I Keep Coming Back

I’ve photographed enough engagement sessions to know that the location can make a huge difference.

I don’t want my couples walking around for an hour doing the exact same pose in front of the exact same background. That’s not really my thing.

I want movement. Variety. Different light. Different textures. A little bit of romance. A little bit of fun.

Blackie Spit gives us all of that without having to spend half the session driving from one location to another.

We can start in the fields, where the tall grasses and wildflowers create this soft, romantic backdrop. There’s something about putting a couple right into the middle of all that texture that makes the photos feel relaxed and organic.

And then there are the little hills and open areas where I can change the perspective and create something completely different.

Which is particularly useful when I’m asking a couple to do approximately 47 versions of “just be yourselves.” 😂

Then There’s the Golden Hour…

This is the part I really love.

As the sun gets lower, Blackie Spit comes alive.

The light filters through the grasses and creates that beautiful warm, glowy look that I love so much. It gives the images depth without me having to manufacture anything.

In these photos, you can see exactly what I mean.

The sun is doing a lot of the heavy lifting.

There’s warmth around the couple, little bits of light coming through the grasses, and enough open space behind them to let that gorgeous evening sky become part of the image.

And because the light keeps changing as the sun drops, we can get an entirely different look just by moving a few feet.

That’s something I’ve learned from actually photographing here—not just looking at pretty photos of the location online.

The magic isn’t necessarily in finding the perfect spot.

It’s in knowing when to use each spot and how to work with the light that’s happening right then.

And Yes… We Are Going to Sit in the Grass

Because why not?

Some of my favourite images from this session are the ones where these two are simply sitting together in the field.

They’re not doing anything complicated.

They’re just hanging out, laughing, cuddling, kissing and being comfortable together.

Those are the moments I want to create during an engagement session.

Beautiful portraits are great. I love them.

But I also want you to look back at your gallery and think:

“Oh my gosh, that’s SO us.”

Not:

“Why was I standing like that?”

The Beach Is the Bonus

After spending time in the fields, we can head toward the water and completely change the feel of the session.

Suddenly we’ve gone from warm, grassy, romantic portraits to wide-open skies and that beautiful coastal backdrop.

And if we time it right, we get that gorgeous sunset behind you.

This is one of the reasons I love Blackie Spit so much for engagement sessions. It doesn’t feel like we’re photographing in the same place for an hour.

The gallery has variety.

You get the close-up romantic images.

The fun ones.

The editorial-looking portraits.

The quiet little moments.

The wide environmental shots.

And the photos where you’re basically just wrapped up in each other while the sun is setting.

That’s my kind of engagement session.

What I Learned From This Session

The biggest takeaway from photographing this particular session?

Don’t rush golden hour.

It’s tempting to look at your watch and think, “Okay, we’ve been here long enough.”

But the light at the beginning of sunset is completely different from the light five, ten or fifteen minutes later.

As the sun drops, everything gets warmer and softer.

So rather than trying to race through every possible location, I like to let the session unfold.

We move when the light tells us to move.

We stop when something looks good.

And if I see a patch of grass, pretty light and the two of you looking ridiculously cute together?

We’re stopping.

Sorry. It’s the law.

So… Is Blackie Spit the Best Engagement Session Location in the Fraser Valley?

I’m obviously a little biased but after photographing there, I can confidently say it’s one of the locations I love most for engagement photos.

It has everything I look for in a session:

Beautiful light.
Variety.
Room to move.
Natural surroundings.
A relaxed feeling.
And a sunset that knows how to make an entrance.

Most importantly, it gives me the opportunity to photograph couples in a way that feels romantic, candid and editorial without making the session feel like a giant posing marathon.

And that’s exactly what I want for my couples.

You don’t need to know how to pose.

You don’t need to be models.

You just need to show up, hang out with your favourite person, and trust me to make you look amazing.

I’ll take care of the awkward hand placement. 😉
